I offer complete midwifery care, including pre-conception & fertility counseling, prenatal care, homebirth, waterbirth, VBAC, postpartum care, breastfeeding support, & beyond.
Each mother and family is unique to me and I will work with you to create a plan of care to address your individual needs.
I offer a complimentary 1-hour consultation to discuss if home birth is for you and answer your questions about my services and philosophy, to determine if we are a good match to work together. Interviews take place at my office in Montpelier.
As pregnancy is a time of much transition I begin by checking in with you emotionally and answering your questions to help you prepare for your birth. I will also check your baby each visit, monitor the heartbeat and check for growth. Informed choice is a cornerstone in my practice. This means a discussion of all tests and treatments available in conventional obstetric care. Together we will discuss pros and cons, risk and benefits, and you will make the decision that suits your individual needs. I will refer to alternative practitioners and obstetricians as needed. Lab work and ultrasounds are not routine, but may be recommended. I will meet with you every month until you are 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36, and weekly thereafter until your baby is born. These visits usually last about an hour.
Labor and Birth
Around 35 weeks, we will have a birth team meeting at your house. Anyone coming to the birth is invited to attend. I will come with my assistant. Beginning at 37 weeks, I will be on-call for your birth 24/7. I will stay in contact with you while you are in early labor and I will come to your home when you in active labor and ready for support and stay with you throughout your labor, birth, and the initial postpartum hours. Whenever I am with you, I will carefully monitor you and your baby’s well being. I support fathers, siblings and family to be involved in the birth process in anyway they are comfortable.
I have many years experience with water birth. I think it is a wonderful option. Even if you do not want water birth, I would encourage you to have a water tub for labor.
I will stay a couple of hours after the birth to ensure you and the baby are stable. I will not leave until you have eaten and urinated and the baby has breastfed. I will do a complete newborn exam to ensure the health of your baby. This is exam is done within a few hours after the birth, right next to you so you can see and understand everything that I’m doing.
I will see you and your new baby in your home at 24-36 hours and approximately 4 more times within the first 2 weeks to check on you and your baby's well-being. During this next time of transition I will support you emotionally and assess both you and your baby physically. When ever possible issues will be addressed nutritionally, herbally or homeopathically. I am available to answer questions anytime. I offer both the Newborn Screen and a hearing screening at your house. I will see you again at two, four and six weeks for appointments in my office. At the six-week visit, I offer a full well-woman care exam and family planning options.
